The structural engineering for Ironwood Works involved several innovative solutions to transform the existing structure into a modern commercial space. A key aspect was the replacement of a large masonry spine wall in the building’s centre with a new steel box frame, creating open-plan units and maximising usable floor area. A two-story steel-framed roof extension was added, incorporating roof terraces to enhance the building’s functionality and appeal.

Additionally, a new basement was constructed using an underpinning method, requiring meticulous temporary works sequencing devised in close collaboration with the contractor. These complex structural modifications allowed for increased flexibility and modernised the building while respecting its industrial heritage.
